SMS Authentication

SMS authentication means that when an SCVPN user logs in by providing a user name and password, the Hillstone device, through an SMS modem, sends a dynamically generated random password to the mobile phone number of the user in SMS after the user name and password is entered. The user must enter the random password received in the mobile phone in order to log into SCVPN and access intranet resources. This section describes how to configure the global parameters for the SMS authentication function.

Modem Status

Hillstone device adopts an external GSM modem. Before configuring the SMS authentication function, you need to prepare a SIM card and a GSM modem, and then connect the modem to the device properly. To connect the modem to the device, first, you should insert the SIM card into the GSM modem properly; then, connect the modem to the USB port of the device via a USB cable.

The Modem status section of the SMS Authentication dialog displays the GSM modem status, including "Modem is connected", "Modem does not exist" and "No signal".

Rate Control

You can set the max SMS messages sent per hour or per day for the SMS modem. For excessive messages beyond the rate control, the system will drop the messages and log the event.

To configure the max SMS messages sent per hour, select the Enable check box for Per hour, and then type the message number into the box, or select a number from the box.

To configure the max SMS messages sent per day, select the Enable check box for Per day, and then type the message number into the box, or select a number from the box.

SMS Test

You can send an SMS message to a specified mobile phone number to test whether the system can send SMS messages properly.

To send a test SMS message to a specified mobile phone number, type the phone number into the SMS test box, and then click Send. If the SMS message has been successfully sent, the specified mobile phone number will receive the message; if failed, the system will log the event and describe the reason in the log.
